Alexander Twilight

Twilight, 2021, oil on linen, 60″x 45″. Montpelier, VT State House.

Alexander Twilight (1795-1857) was the first US college graduate and state representative of African descent. He was also a minister and grammar school teacher in Brownington, VT, a strong believer in the potential that both education and spiritual engagement could bring out in anyone and everyone given the chance. For more information on the different elements of the portrait, see my remarks from the portrait unveiling.
